First Riders come in around 10am.

At the end of the 40+ mile ride through the 5 boros of NYC, the riders push themselves over over the Verrazzano  Bridge and ride into the park at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island (our hometown).

This year the organizers did a great thing.  They brought in Best Beverages to organize the food vendors.  As a result,  riders were given an amazing treat of being able to select from all different food trucks, from dumplings to Belgian waffles and of course,  The Bubbas’ Barbikyu.  It really was a true taste of NYC.

Charles and Barb (“the original crew”) were up front with the customers,  while Jen, Chris and Joseph worked their magic on the grills.  We kept many weary riders happy with our fast moving lines and some awesome pork and chicken barbikyu.

The first riders came in around 10am and then the rest of the day was a BLUR.

We were so busy, we didn’t even get a chance to take a picture of our AWESOME set up. Thankfully a blogger from DYIbiking.com managed to get one for us!!! He did a great review of the tour, (which included a fantastic review of our food) check it out!

It was a great day! We especially loved seeing the little ones who made it through the 40+ miles and the smiles on their faces when you congratulated them on finishing the ride.   Everyone told us that this year’s ride was great, but a little cold in the beginning…but it warmed up later.

Barb and Charles met one rider that said, “So, you are based in Englishtown, NJ?”  When they asked him how he knew, he told them that he checked out all the vendors before the ride, so he knew which one he wanted to try.  Now that’s a real foodie!

Another man told them he was from Tennessee, so he was a BBQ expert and knew awesome BBQ.  He said he spotted our charcoal grills.  Well, he liked our barbikyu so much  he came back for another!

At the end of the day, Barb and Charles met a couple from the Bronx that rented bikes to do the tour.  They were waiting for family to come pick them up.  They said it was their first time doing the tour, but they loved the experience and our Barbikyu!   They asked us if we had a restaurant or were anywhere else besides Englishtown.  We asked them how they knew we were in Englishtown, NJ and they said they had been researching us on our website while they were waiting for their ride home.  That made us smile.

The Bubbas’ Barbikyu enjoyed the day in Fort Wadsworth with all the riders and we hope we will be invited back to work the event next year.

Here are a list dates you should keep in mind:

1) Memorial Day – (Last Monday in May)
This is officially the start of the Barbikyu Season.  Get your new grill, charcoal, or BBQ gas tank filled.  Stock up on our marinade.  It has a very long shelf life…but as our fans will tell you, it won’t stay on the shelf for very long!

2) Father’s Day (3rd Sunday in June)
Come on! What dad doesn’t like a good BBQ?  How about Barbikyu Chicken sandwiches?  or Ribs?  Make a few side dishes and salad and everyone will be happy!  Top the meal off with a grilled banana and some ice cream.  Give dad the best gift ever…a jar of Bubbas’ Barbikyu Marindade.

3) 4th of July
Oh yeah.  You can have the hot dogs and burgers, but you can also show your barbikyu skills with some shishkabobs.  Order them from us at Englishtown in frozen trays of 20 or more.

4) Labor Day (1st Monday in September)
People say this is the end of the grilling season, but we know better.  You might want to put away the white shoes, but not your grills.  Make it a good one with, pork, chicken and steak.  Try grilled sweet potatoes for a side dish.

5) New Years Eve  – Jan 1
Even in NY, our Barbikyu can really give a little added pizazz for your party.  Its a fantastic appetizer. Put a few pieces of marinated pork and chicken on your BBQ (charcoal tastes best), but you can also do on your foreman grill.  Cut and stick a toothpick in it.  Yummy!

6) Valentine’s Day – Feb 14
How romantic is a marinated steak dinner?  Show the one you love how much you care by planning an intimate dinner…. by the barbikyu (okay, maybe candlelight would be better).

7) Mother’s Day – (2nd Sunday in May)
Mom means family gathering.  How about fajitas, featuring steak, shrimp, and chicken marinated in Bubbas’ Barbikyu.  Think of it with FRESH guacamole, shredded cheese, and more.

We’ve grown a lot in the past 3 years, building a loyal following in Englishtown, and adding our bottled marinate to our product offerings.  This past year we also added “Boobah,” our second trailer to the family.  Our new addition also allows us to try other events and offer catering services.

As we go into the 2013 grilling season, we say “Thank you” to our customers and look forward to seeing your smiling faces at Englishtown Auctions!

As you know, many areas along the beaches of New York and New Jersey were devastated by the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Lives were lost, houses were swept away, or severely damaged by the sea surge.  These communities are doing everything they can to rebuild and hundreds are volunteering to lend a hand.

When we saw an announcement in the Staten Island Advance for a Charity BBQ to help the workers and victims of Sandy in South Beach Staten Island, we knew we had to get involved.  We loaded up “Boo-Bah” our new trailer, and got ready to grill!  Our friends Charles, Samantha, and Mr. Sanchez also joined us to help.

It was a beautiful day for a BBQ and we were one of at least 10 groups helping to serve the community.  In addition to food, there was water, cleaning supplies and clothes available for those in need.

We had 3 grills going, with donated hot dogs, burgers, sausage, chicken and of course, our donated barbikyu!   We even had a pot on the grill with water to make hot chocolate.  Our table also helped distribute desserts, cookies, Dunkin Donuts and Alphonso’s cake that magically appeared as donations throughout the day.

Along with the other volunteers, we served hundreds good, cooked food.  People we served were appreciative of our efforts and thanked us for doing what we were doing.

What was so amazing about this event, was that the organizer John Castro and Eric Ortiz started it as something small, to help the community.  Their friends urged them to put it in the Staten Island Advance and that’s when it took off.  The Vanderbilt (a catering hall at South Beach, that was also affected by the storm)  helped with the set up and offered parking for the volunteers, and then the donations started rolling in…This was a perfect example of  “if you build it (or grill it) they will come.”

The Bubbas would like to thank  Eric Agc Ortiz and John Castro for putting this event together and allowing us to put our grills to work to help the same community that helped us get started! It was an honor to be a part of the day.

This week marked a HUGE milestone for the Bubbas.  We added BOO-BAH to our family and baptized him with our very first NJ festival, QUE BY THE SEA in Seaside Heights, NJ.

BOO-BAH is a smaller trailer than our first, “Baby Bubba” that lives in Englishtown, NJ but this little guy allows us to take our Barbikyu show on the road!

Now while our main crew keeps things going strong in Englishtown, our travel team is ready to grill anywhere BOO-BAH can take them.

Our first event was in Seaside NJ at QUE BY THE SEA.  We first learned about this festival in August while participating in a grilling competition in New Paltz.  A fellow griller Best Butt in Town BBQ told us all about it, and we decided to enter the Que’s grilling competition, but we didn’t make the cut, and so we applied to be a vendor.

As you can see, we were small in comparison to many of our neighbors, but we kept busy.  After 3 days of straight selling with our skeleton crew, we were BEAT.

We met a lot of great people (many were repeat customers who came back with friends an family) and enjoyed the experience.  Its so much fun to talk with customers and hear them say how much they like our Barbikyu!

It really reminded us of our early days in NYC, with three exceptions…It didn’t rain on us, we didn’t need FREE SAMPLES to get customers (these people know good BBQ when they see it), and BOO-BAH made setting up and breaking down a lot easier for us.

Well BOO-BAH, welcome to the family. We have been dreaming about you for some time now.   We look forward to new adventures with you!
